RF600VPN and RF660VPN Hard Disk Drive Recovery Guide.

This document applies to the RF600VPN and the RF660VPN. All references to RouteFinder VPN apply to the RF600VPN and the RF660VPN.

The information in this document is to be used if the RF600VPN/RF660VPN hard disk drive should fail.

The RF600VPN and RF660VPN ship kits include a Software Recovery CD that can be used to restore your RouteFinder VPN’s hard disk drive to its factory defaults. The Software Recovery CD is a bootable CD with a bootloader that goes to each hard disk drive partition and automatically loads.

Do not put this CD into your computer’s CD-ROM. It will erase data from your computer’s hard drive. This CD should be used only in a CD-ROM attached to your RouteFinder VPN. The hard disk drive recovery procedure will erase data from and completely repartition the RouteFinder VPN hard drives. All VPN hard disk drive data will be lost (e.g., all Logfile data, Updates, etc. will be overwritten) and factory defaults will be restored.

If the RF600VPN/RF660VPN hard disk drive should fail, perform the following steps to recover the hard disk drive.

VPN Hard Disk Drive Recovery Procedure
The VPN Hard Disk Drive Recovery procedure involves two distinct processes:

A. Erase the VPN HD Drive and Re-Install the RouteFinder VPN Software.
B. Enter a unique License Key Number on the RF600VPN or RF660VPN Hard Disk Drive using WebAdmin from a Workstation.

A. Erase the RouteFinder VPN HD Drive and Re-Install the RouteFinder VPN Software

1. Disconnect the LAN, WAN and DMZ cables at the back of the RouteFinder. Remove the top cover. Connect a keyboard and monitor.
2. Configure the CD-ROM drive to run in slave mode.
3. Carefully, with RouteFinder powered off, connect the CD-ROM drive to the hard disk drive cable's unused CD-ROM drive connector.
4. For the RF600VPN, connect the power cable from the RF600VPN 4-pin Molex connector to the CD-ROM drive and connect power to the RF600VPN. For the RF660VPN, use a 4-pin Molex cable from the power supply.
5. Insert the Software Recovery CD into the VPN’s CD-ROM drive. If the system starts to boot from the hard drive instead of the CD-ROM drive, then the CD was not installed fast enough. Power the system off and back on.
6. The CD will automatically boot and prompt you to type Y and<Enter>before erasing the hard drive, configuring the hard drive, and installing the new software.
7. When the installation is complete, the system will beep three times, eject the CD, and reboot the system.
8. Remove the Software Recovery CD from the CD-ROM drive and return the CD to its packaging. Disconnect the RouteFinder’s power cable and disconnect the CD-ROM drive from the power supply and from the hard disk drive cable's CD-ROM drive connector. Reconnect the hard disk drive cable and the LAN, WAN and DMZ cables. Secure the cover on the RouteFinder.

B. Enter a Unique License Key Number on the RF600VPN or RF660VPN Hard Disk Drive

The unique License Key number is on the RF600VPN or RF660VPN Quick Start Guide, the internal hard disk drive, and on a label on the RouteFinder chassis bottom. This unique number must be entered into the RouteFinder’s hard disk drive to make it fully operational.

1. Power-up the RouteFinder. When you hear five beeps, it is ready to use the WebAdmin software to access it using a workstation.
2. Connect an Ethernet cable between the workstation and the RouteFinder's LAN port. Make sure the workstation has an IP address the same subnet as 192.168.2.x
3. Bring up the workstation and access the RouteFinder using a Web browser. Specify the Web address as: HTTPS://
4. Click on Yes and accept any security prompts that are presented. The Multi-Tech Login screen displays asking for your User Name and Password. The Login screen displays as an Unregistered version.
5. Type admin as the User Name and the Password, and then click Login.
6. Enter the 20-digit License Key sequence (letters must be all upper case) as provided on the RouteFinder's Quick Start Guide, internal Hard Disk Drive, and on a label on the RouteFinder chassis bottom. When entering the license key, be careful to distinguish between the zero "0" and the letter "O". Click Save to save this key code.
7. The WebAdmin home screen now displays. Configure the RouteFinder as necessary to meet your network needs.
8. To shutdown the RouteFinder, click on Administration, click on Shutdown, and then click on Shutdown again. Then click OK to shut down the RouteFinder. It will take several minutes for it to shut down.
9. When you hear a continuous beep coming from the RouteFinder, power it off.

The Hard Disk Drive recovery procedure is complete. All of the existing hard disk drive data is overwritten and factory defaults are restored. Normal RouteFinder operation can be resumed using factory default settings.
