Can the speaker volume be lowered or turned off on this modem?

The speaker volume can not be lowered, but it can be turned off with the Mn command.

Command: Mn Monitor Speaker Mode
Values: n = 0, 1, 2 or 3

M0 = Speaker is always off
M1 = Speaker on until carrier signal detected (default)
M2 = Speaker always on when modem is off-hook
M3 = Speaker on during dialing and off during handshaking

To disable the speaker in Windows 95/98 and XP Classic Mode:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Modems>General>Properties>Connection>Advanced
In the extra settings box enter M0 or ATM0 (number zero not letter O)
If this doesn't work, you may have an application that doesn't use the Windows dialer, see the note below.

To disable the speaker in Windows 2000:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Phone and Modem Options>Modems>Properties>Advanced
In the extra settings box enter M0 or ATM0 (number zero not letter O)
Note: The modem must be powered on in order to select the Properties option.
If this doesn't work, you may have an application that doesn't use the Windows dialer, see the note below.

To disable the speaker in Windows XP Default mode:

Start>Control Panel>Phone and Modem Options>Modems>Properties>Advanced
In the extra settings box enter M0 or ATM0 (number zero not letter O)
Note: The modem must be powered on in order to select the Properties option.
If this doesn't work, you may have an application that doesn't use the Windows dialer, see the note below.

To disable the speaker in a non Windows environment:

Add the M0 (number zero not letter O) to the modem initialization string. If the software does not send an initialization string, then use a terminal or terminal emulation program to give the modem the following command. This will permanantly store the speaker setting.

ATM0&W<cr>

Note:
The above procedure may not work in all applications. Some applications send an&F command which will default the modem back to M1(speaker on). In this situation you need to put the M0 in the modem initialization string that the software sends to the modem.

For example, if your current initialization string is 'AT&F', then change it to 'AT&FM0'.
