Apparently the Multi-Tech modem 'drops' the PPP connection until a request for service appears from the LAN side Gateway to the WAN. This dropped connection prevents the client from connecting to the LAN side Telnet server.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

How do we configure the modem to "stay" on-line so that WAN side clients can find the LAN server?

RESPONSE:

To setup the wireless Edge connection to be connected all the time, you must do the following:
- Disable Dial on Demand in PPP setup
- Enable ICMP keep alive check in PPP setup. You need to specify the IP address that is pingable on the internet and you need to specify the interval to send out the ping and how many ping in order to check the internet connection being still alive.
- Click on Save&Restart
