What is a device driver?
A device driver is a module of software that enables one specific operating system to
recognize and communicate with a piece of hardware. Operating systems are written to
understand hardware from many manufacturers of such core devices as mice, keyboards, and
monitors. Additional "peripheral" devices, such as printers, scanners, and
modems, may also have drivers included in a given operating system.
When a device is not considered mainstream, or when the capabilities of that device go
beyond that of its generic counterparts, a specific driver for that device is often
necessary for the operating system to make use of its specialized features or to enable
robust operation.
