Multi-Tech Shipping First Universal IP Stack Embedded Modem for M2M Applications
New SocketModem® GPRS With Command Interface Designed for Future Applications
MINNEAPOLIS, SEPTEMBER 9, 2008 – Multi-Tech® Systems, Inc., a leading data communications and telecommunications technology company based in suburban Minneapolis, is now shipping a new embedded modem for M2M applications that includes the company’s Universal IP (UIP) stack. The design allows developers to add wireless communications to products with a minimum of development time and expense and retain the IP stack interface for implementing other communications technologies in future applications. The new SocketModem® GPRS, model MTSMC-G-F4-IP, wireless modem is a complete, ready-to-integrate, communications device that offers standards-based GSM/GPRS Class 10 performance. This quick-to-market communications device allows developers to add wireless communication to products with a minimum of development time and expense. The new SocketModem GPRS is part of the company’s Universal Socket Connectivity family that shares common design footprint and pin assignments.
“What the universal IP stack does is take the burden of supporting TCP/IP functionality from the design hardware and software and make it part of the communications module,” states Bill Chesney, Vice President of Sales for Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. “Designers must still program to the Multi-Tech Universal IP stack, but that interface will be standard for multiple communications technologies. Our new SocketModem GPRS is the first in our line of embedded communications products that include Multi-Tech’s Universal IP stack, which will make implementing different communications capabilities efficient and streamlined.”
Multi-Tech’s Universal IP (UIP) implemented in the new SocketModem GPRS consists of a common set of TCP/IP networking protocols and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications implemented using a standard AT command interface. UIP allows developers to write their host application one time while having the freedom to select from a growing number of Universal Socket communication devices. The GPRS Class 10 modem features Quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, packet data up to 85.6K bps, circuit-switched data up to 14.4K bps, Short Message Services (SMS), and advanced management features including phone book management, fixed dialing number, real time clock and alarm management MMCX plus an antenna connector and SIM socket.
