Multi-Tech Announces Ethernet Cellular Wireless Router Targeted at Enterprise Applications
VPN and Encryption Features Add Security needed for Sensitive Data
MINNEAPOLIS, APRIL 5, 2006 — For enterprises needing to connect a remote location with a secure link over the Internet, choosing a cellular wireless technology instead of a landline can be more flexible, lower cost and often produce better performance with equal security. Multi-Tech® Systems, Inc., a leading data communications and telecommunications technology manufacturer in suburban Minneapolis, announces the MultiModem® Ethernet® Wireless Router, which uses data encryption, user authentication and the Internet to securely connect remote locations via built-in EDGE, GPRS, or CDMA cellular modems. Applications for the new product include use as back up if a primary WAN connection fails, as a primary connection for temporary network locations, such as construction sites and tax offices, or for mobile networks as in emergency response situations. The new MultiModem Ethernet Wireless Routers are expected to start shipping in the second quarter of 2006.
“By combining the attributes of a VPN router operating over the Internet and cellular wireless technology, applications in the M2M environment can benefit from a flexible, cost-effective solution that can often out perform dial-up lines,” states Chip Harleman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Multi-Tech Systems. “For instance, consider a company installing VPN connectivity to remote sites on a national or worldwide basis. By using a wireless provider with wide coverage, there will be only a single company to deal with, not multiple local companies and procedures. And with a single cellular company, volume pricing can possibly make wireless a lower cost solution, especially if landlines are not readily available. The pricing for wireless is also by usage, so low volume data applications do not have to absorb the cost of a full time line. On the performance side, newer EDGE technologies can be faster than dial-up lines, plus the call set-up time for a dial-up line is typically longer than wireless. This can make wireless a better performer. The point is that when considering the need for a secure remote connection, be sure to consider cellular wireless, and also be sure to consider the new MultiModem Ethernet Wireless Router to implement it.”
