Multi-Tech Remote Office IP Telephony Helps Solve 911 Calling Problems

SIP VOIP and Cellular PBX Gateway Combo for SMBs

MINNEAPOLIS – January 23, 2007 – For a Small- to Medium-sized Business (SMB) wanting to use IP (Internet Protocol) telephony at a remote office, the prospect of adding IP phones connected to a headquarters IP PBX (Private Branch eXchange) without the expense of any remote office phone lines is very appealing. The challenge is how to provide emergency phone (911) service for the remote office. In addition to the desire to protect employees with the 911 capability, providing emergency service may be a legal requirement and, if not provided, a potential legal liability. Multi-Tech® Systems has a solution that is low cost and requires no recurring expenses. By combining one of the company’s Voice over IP (VoIP) servers and a cellular gateway, a remote office can use IP phones for normal business communications and the cellular phone network for emergency calls.

The way it works is that a two-port Multi-Tech Systems’ MultiVOIP™ Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Server is set up on the network at the remote office as a trunk to the IP PBX. A Multi-Tech Systems’ CallFinder® GSM or CDMA cellular gateway is also connected to the MultiVOIP server and to a cellular service provider. If the provider uses GSM technology, the gateway can be equipped with a pre-paid SIM card so there are no recurring costs. Normal business communications are through the IP phones and, if the remote office IP phones make emergency calls, the IP PBX routes the calls back to the remote office via the MultiVOIP and CallFinder. The system can be set up for under US$1500 excluding the cellular service.

"Another benefit to this combination is that one of the MuliVOIP ports can be used for a fax machine," states Chip Harleman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. "Being equipped with T.38 standard real-time fax relay capability, the MultiVOIP will enable exchanging fax messages with other locations on the network. Just attach a standard fax machine to an open port and it’s operational. The solution of using a MultiVOIP and CallFinder will not only protect your remote office employees emergency communications, but will add productivity was well."

MultiVOIP SIP Voice and Fax over IP (VoIP) Server two-port models are priced at MSRPs of US$999 (model MVP210-SS), US$899 (model MVP210) and US$599 (model MVPFX2-2). CallFinder cellular gateways are priced at MSRPs of US$499 (GSM model CF100FX2-G) and US$599 (CDMA model CF100FX2-C).
